Next to the Xperia Z2, Sony also presented us with a new tablet at the Mobile World Congress 2014: the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet. The new 10-inch device is elegant and the manufacturer’s choices when making it place it on the high-end side of the Android spectrum. We were able to conduct a short hands-on review while in Barcelona.

The Xperia Z2 is perhaps one of the most aesthetically pleasing tablets of the entire MWC 2014. It depends on taste of course, but its design is a definite success. At first glance, it looks quite similar to its predecessor the Xperia Z Tablet, but the Z2 is a lot thinner at just 0.5 mm.
The moment I held the Z2 in my hands, its 439 grams felt exquisite and ergonomic. Like all devices in the Xperia family, the Z2 Tablet is IP58 certified, therefore watertight and dustproof.
The Z2 Tablet runs on the Android 4.4 KitKat with Sony’s own user interface, Xperia UI. This is exactly the same as on the Xperia Z2, the only difference being that it lacks the phone and messaging apps, as well as the camera app.
Sony’s current apps are also available on the Z2 Tablet, like Walkman, Playstation etc. We’ll come back to the features that Sony packed in its shiny new tablet once we have the device in office for a complete software tour, so stay tuned.
The IP panel of 10.1 inches has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels, classifying it a little higher than Full HD and the results are excellent. Though it doesn’t attain Z2’s awesome color representation, it does offer the best you can get in tablets at the moment. Watching videos and playing games on the Z2 Tablet was quite impressive.

Its design is probably one of the best right now and its display is also top class in the world of 10-inch tablets. Sony announced that it will cost £599 for the Wifi and 16GB internal storage version and is available in Europe as well as the UK. So far there’s no exact price or date for the USA and Canada. As soon as we receive the Sony tablet in our AndroidPIT office, we will be able to deliver a full hardware review.
What do you think of the Xperia Z2 Tablet? Is it something you would purchase?
