On February 24 at the 2014 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, the world got its first glimpse at one of the most anticipated phones that’s coming this year. Samsung officially unveiled its Galaxy S5, which had only recently been announced by Verizon Wireless. But with the MWC behind us and the reports rolling in, it’s time to take a look at what to expect from this smartphone that’s expected to be available for purchase in April. For those interested in the raw data, the full specifications for the S5 can be seen by scrolling down.

According to Samsung, all photographers amateur and professional have a lot to look forward to with this new piece of tech. The primary camera shoots film at 16 megapixels with what’s being called the world’s fastest autofocus at 0.3 seconds. Not only that, but the front camera (for all the selfie takers out there) is a very respectable 2.1 megapixels. They’ll be viewed on a 5.1-inch display (just a touch bigger than the preceding Galaxy S) and stored on either a 16GB or 32GB internal hard-drive. The option for more space is there for those interested, as you can expand 64GB with a microSD card.

Additionally, fitness enthusiasts can expect some highly interesting and intuitive features, including a built-in heart rate sensor. It’s part of the S Health 3.0, which is built into the phone and serves as an activity tracker with a variety of tools. If you want to get more in-depth with it, there are always apps available for doing so in the Google Play store.

If you use your phone more for entertainment such as on-the-go gaming, music, and streaming video, the S5 looks promising here, too. Along with the larger screen with a sharp 1920×1080 resolution, the new Galaxy boasts tech that combines both WiFi and LTE 4G. The result is faster downloads and uploads through the Download Booster system, which is also said to reduce the amount of strain you put on the phone’s battery. That can also be accomplished through the new power-saving mode, which turns the display to black and white while closing all extraneous apps to conserve energy. The end-game here, basically, is to bring the fastest connection possible with minimal wear on the battery.

Samsung also hopes that this will be its safest device yet. That just may be accomplished with the inclusion of a fingerprint scanner, which makes sure you (and only you) can access your phone’s contents. There’s also the other side to safety: ensuring that your device doesn’t get easily damaged. Samsung states that it’s dust and water resistant IP67, much like the Galaxy S4, so hopefully that means a bit more protection than what current users are accustomed to.
