Nexus

In the middle of June, there was a report that came out stating that LG would not be the manufacturer of choice for the Nexus smartphone launched in 2014. Later in July, a big nod was given to Motorola, with another report confirming that a Nexus-branded Motorola “phablet” was on the way, with a 5.9-inch display. A pair of new stories have quite a bit of information, with some of it not necessarily lining up with previous reports.

The first comes from PhoneArena, which outlines information pertaining to the upcoming launch of the next Nexus smartphone. According to the report, Google is essentially going to copy their playbook from 2013, and launch the next-generation Nexus phone without an announcement. The site also claims that the “Nexus X” name is not quite official, but that this is the codename being bandied about internally. However, it is believed that it could be the final name chosen for the public release. The model number, though, is still said to be XT1100.

The launch itself is said to take place between late October and early November, but apparently no date has been settled quite yet. The report also confirms the specifications we’ve heard in the past, including the 5.-inch 1440×2560 display, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor clocked at 2.7GHz, and the 13-megapixel camera on the back.

Another report from TKTechNews also cropped up on August 24, which outlines a distinct picture that’s quite different than what we’ve heard in the past. Specifically, the report cites several different sources (repeatedly), including those from Best Buy, Verizon, Sprint, and more. Based on the information that the site ascertained, they have put together a post that “confirms” the Moto X (the names line up, at least) will have not a 5.9-inch display, but instead a 5.3-inch display. While that doesn’t necessarily match with what we’ve heard in the past, they do corroborate that the Moto X will feature the 13MP camera, along with the 2.7GHz processor. The model number, too, is listed as XT1100, while running Android 5.0 “Lemon Meringue Pie.”

As it stands, there’s still some debate to be had, it seems, about specific specifications. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if Motorola and Google opted to launch the device later this year, a year after the Nexus 5's launch. With the pricing still up in the air, too, it will be interesting to see how the next-gen Nexus smartphone stacks up.

Are you looking forward to the Nexus X? Do you prefer a 5.3- or 5.9-inch screen?
