Sony has just begun rolling out Android 4.4 for the Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact and Z Ultra, with the Xperia Z, ZL, Tablet Z and ZR getting the KitKat treatment from mid-Q2. Of course, you'll have to wait for your particular carrier to push the update to you and this can sometimes take weeks to spread to everyone, but the flood gates have opened, and a whole lot of Sony devices are going to be rocking 4.4 real soon.

Sony is promising some new experiences on KitKat for Xperia owners, including the usual performance and UI optimizations, a tweaked status bar and quick settings, PlayStation 4-esque UI and downloadable UI theme packs to add a whole new layer of cool to your device. There's also all new versions of the Sony suite of apps: Messaging, MyXperia, Smart Connect, Small apps, TrackID, TrackID TV, Sony Select, Smart Social Camera and all of Sony's media apps like Walkman, album and movies, which will now work with Sony's cloud integration service.

Sony rounded out the announcement with the timeline for the second-wave devices mentioned above, as well as the confirmation that Android 4.4. KitKat will indeed become available on the Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia E1 and Xperia M2, but the timelines and further details for these devices will come later. There are also no details on which countries will be affected.
